Julian Assange .. the guy behind all this fuss

Dear editor,

After watching and studying this whole WikiLeaks controversy which is the cause of the world's upheaval, my opinion about whether this whole situation is right or wrong, has been made. What do we really know? Just because something is on the news, doesnt mean it's exactly what happened. Information get twisted, and sometimes .. the truth is left out.

I do not find Julian Assange guilty of anything. He, as any other person, believes that the truth should be revealed. He did so by revealing many confidential documents of the U.S and many other countries. He believes that everyone should know the truth and should not be lied to. The revealing of these documents created a dramatic controversy in the world, whether it was people who were shocked to find out the truth of some events, or others who oppose Assange's action and believe some things are better left unsaid.

More than 300,000 documents were released by Assange, some that show the innocent death of young people, which in the news might say "it was only done for protection". One of those documents show an Apache Helicopter, with a gunner shooting down on who they thought were insurgents, but actually turned out to be News Reporters. The things said and done extremely shocked me in that video; I would have never thought a thing like this would be done. But now, I thank Assange because his determination in wanting the truth to be revealed to everyone in the is what is making everything clear and vivid for us, and now, we actually know what is happening in this world.

Some people believe that Assanges actions is wrong, and that it will cause political problems and leave many countries discontent. But what I dont understand is, why be mad at the truth? Why be lied to? Why not KNOW whats happening in the world? Why believe something from one perspective? Why be not worth the truth?

So in conclusion, the lies and the disguises are all being revealed and the truth is what from now on, will be shown. So why live in a big bubble of lies, when the truth is just sitting there waiting for Assange to expose it? ;)

Bomb factory :o

When it comes to those detained prisoners, I would harshly interrogate them, day and night until they confess, but I would not keep those 6 close to each other in order to have no communication with each other no matter what. If nothing happens and they do not cooperate, then I would get more serious and would possibly think of waterboarding or other methods of torture that could make them confess but at the same time, wont extremely physiclly harm them because that could cause problems and the discontent of the countries of those prisoners and cause them to rally. I think the short repercussions would just be the physical pain of those prisoners.
I am willing to do anything to get that information, because peoples lives are on the line.

United States Declaration of War and the German Response to the United States

In the American wordle, the words "Government", "war", "rights", and "German" appeared the most. If trying to figure out the tone of the US declaration of war, I would say that the Americans worried about people's rights during that time and also worried about the German government and wanted peace even though they will defend theirselves and their nation no matter what.

In the German wordle, the words "nations", "war","blockade", and "states" were emphasized and repeated often. It was actually what the Germans wanted; they wanted war. They were ready for it and actually went for it. They threatened to sink anyone who goes on the water and used blockades and submarines to protect themselves. So by that, the 2 wordles show how the U.S and the Germans had a totally different opinion of war.

Call of Duty, just a game or more than that?

Call of Duty is a video game that positions in World War II. It has become very known and widespread among people, especially teenagers, nowadays. It is a game that is surprisingly accurate and quite realistic. It is so realistic that when viewing pictures of soldiers and war events, some people believe it to be real images.
Even though it is just a video game, some people do not agree with it and believe that it should not be allowed to exist. Now I wouldn’t really agree with that, because no matter what, it is still a game.
Some people just play it for fun, and some people play to visualize and sense what it would have felt like to be in war and to be in all that chaos and strain. You might think oh this video contains too much violence, vulgarity, blood, etc... but once again, ITS JUST A GAME.

Call of Duty was a way to show the real events of war, not the clean images we mostly see. There is nothing wrong about seeing a bit of blood, or fighting in order to save your life or your friends’. The thing about video games is that at the end, you pretty much lose nothing. You might lose and die but then you’ll just feel a bit disappointed or upset but you’ll get over it. It’s nothing serious and can affect your life in a way.

Some people might say that it is not appropriate, but it’s not like you really were at war and youre going through all that horror, you’re just getting a taste of what it would be like and imagining yourself being there at that time, practicing and fighting and doing all what you think you would have done at that time. It’s just a fictional game, and should not be taken that seriously

Real war is a million times different. There isn’t even a comparison between them! Losing a life during that time isn’t just like dying in a game. In real life, theres no restart button, theres no returns, theres no “play again”, because once youre dead, youre gone.
In the video game, they try to keep it as real as possible. With the blood, the players, the scenes and all, but come on, you know at the end its all not real. The emotions cant even be expressed through the game. The tension, the fear, the excitement.. nothing. You might be jumping up and down and screaming at the game while playing and all that, but unfortunately, the player wont REALLY feel the way the soldiers did out there.
So therefore, I believe that Call of Duty should be allowed to exist because it’s just a game and theres nothing wrong with trying to relate to war and its events and emotions because at the end, the real lost will only be the $60 payed for it, and not a real life.

DIE DIE DIEEEE!!!

COME ONNNN JUST DIEEEE ALREADDYYY! That was the only thing running through my mind while playing the Dogfight game. It seemed pretty cool at first, but it wasnt easy .. AT ALL! Im sure a pilot flying one of those planes during an air-to-air combat situation felt the same! Flying around for quite a long time was tiring and frustrating and you just wanted the other plane to just crash! Going at it for hours and hours made it really provoking, but they couldnt do anything about it because they had to protect themselves and win in that war.
But without those new technologies, wars would have been much more harder and took longer, so I guess we owe everything to technology, once again.

Waiting .. waiting .. still waiting ..

What would the world do nowadays without texting, facebook, email, and all these new technologies?! I admit, I'd die if I didnt have a phone, or wasnt able to log in on facebook for a whole day. But now that im thinking about it, what would happen to me if I was a soldier during World War I? Id have to wait weeeeks just to get a letter.. A LETTER! I get mad if a person doesnt text back quickly, HOW ABOUT WAITING FOR WEEKS?! It isnt easy ..
Many soldiers wrote to their wives, parents, family, and friends to ask how they're doing and assure that they were fine out there in war, but when they sent those letters, they had to wait for weeks to get back a letter, IF they were still alive .. Anything can happen during those two weeks. A family member might recieve a letter from one of the soldiers and then the next day he could be gone.
Waiting is very agonizing and frustrating, so soldiers werent really happy about that at that time and did bother them. Nowadays, you can just easily just lift up the phone and call a loved one and reassure them that you are safe.
An example of one of those letters is a letter sent by a Mr. Adams to his aunt wishing her a Merry Christmas and wishing he was there at the time. It must have been really hard for those soldiers because they couldnt be there physically and had to share their wishes through a letter.
Ironic, because now people just wish a person a Merry Christmas just by simplytexting them or even by writing on their wall .. ha, what a great effect technology has on life now.

Imperialism in .. Avatar?!

Yup, I said it; there is imperialism in Avatar! Avatar is one of the best movies ever made. It's story, events, themes, actions, EVERYTHING, is amazing about it. Yeah it might be a really long movie about blue people, but its beyond that. Imperialism occurs in Avatar! I'm sure youre wondering how, so let me tell you how.
Avatar is a movie about a guy who decided to take his brothers place in traveling to the distant world of Pandora. The reason of this mission was to exterminate the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to obtain the precious materials found in their land. Hmmm.. lets see, doesnt imperialism mean the act of one nation gaining political or economic control over other countries? .. I think so!

So the Na'vis, after feeling threatened by the Earth people, defend themselves and their lands. The only reason the Earth people want to take over is for material, for their own economic advantage. Imperialism is very similar to that since sometimes the only reason a country takes over another and extends its authority is for its own econonmic growth.
In Avatar, the Earth people use better machinery and better fighting techniques and are physically stronger and larger than the Na'vis. They take advantage of that, and destroy what they have and make them weaker than they already are and just make them surrender. A country is basically the same. Knowing that another country is weaker, it's takes advantage of it by attacking it and ruling it and putting it under its rules and regulations so therefore the country being attacked cant stop them or do anything about it and just accept it.

Imperialism can be either political, economic, and military. In this case, Avatar has economic imperialism and probably military imperialism.

Taking advantage of a weak country is not right. Soooo many countries practiced imperialism; Spain, U.S, Belgium, China, France, Russia, Germany, etc. The list can go on and on.

So, I hope now that when you watch Avatar, you actually pay more attention to the events and relate it to imperialism because it is VERY much alike and you'll be surprised by its similarities. Imperialism, whether it was just in movies, or in real life, is not right and it creates even more problems and wars and ruins the economy of the country being invaded. But bottom line, BULLYING IS NOT NICE.

Current Imperialism

Many countries have practiced imperialism; Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Britain, U.s., Belgium, and much more. But recently, China joined the list. This article http://revolutionaryfrontlines.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/chinese-imperialism-extends-its-naval-power-to-the-middle-east/ talks about the extending of Chinese imperialism to the Middle East. One of the reasons for this extension is China's want to defend its coast and prepare for war over Taiwan. Also, by this extension, China's plans to assert its interests abroad and extend its operational reach beyond the South China Sea and the Philippines. China is one of the most important countries in the world; its the leader in exporting and buying oil and other natural resources. I believe this is political imperialism because it wants to strengthen its sea defense and protects its country's transportatiion routes and the safety of their sea lanes and become an even greater power in the world.

off to work, UGH.

Work, work, work, aaaaaaand work. Today? it isnt different than yesterday, or the day before, or the day before that, or even tomorrow. It's the same everyday. Get up, go to work, work until youre exhausted, sleep, get up, and back to work. You think it's not that bad, but trust me, it is. Having to work for hours and hours and hours under the hot, humid climate is not easy. And you think I go there and have fun with the guys? No. Being scared of losing your life is not a good feeling. Knowing that every mile of the Canal, 500 lives are lost keeps you terrified and worried whether youre next or if its the guy you just became friends with. Sudden death to some people sounded pretty good compared to suffering. Diseases and physical exertion didnt make it any easier. Working at the Canal was not an easy task. The hot climate, the spreading diseases, the fear of being killed, yeah, trust me .. its not really the life you'd want.

Oh its just a school teaching how to torture, rape, and assassinate other people, no biggy.

So, looking for your dream school? One famous for its counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics? Well guess what, we have found the school for you; The School of the Americas (SOA). It just isnt any ordinary school, where you go get educated in order to get your degree and graduate and get a job. No, here, your taught how to rage war against your own people. Awesome huh? Oh yeah. I mean who wouldnt want to be the most powerful person in their country?
But, as awesome as that sounds, ITS WRONG. The U.S should NOT be able to operate such an organization! That just creates viciousness among people and the desire for power which makes them greedy and therefore will not let anything stop them to achieve their goal. That will just result in the loss of lives and more violence which really, is unnecessary!
I believe this school should be shut down asap, because it is just .. absurd.

Conserve the Union not slavery!

Abe Lincoln wanted to conserve the union because if he conserved the union it would show he was a powerful leader, and that the nation was a strong nation. If he conserved slavery, the nation would be split into two, and people would view the nation as weak. They would think that if we break our selves up, then any other nation can just come right it and conquer us! And as Americans, Americans always like to feel superior.

History is the lie commonly agreed upon... thats 100% true

History IS the lie commonly agreed on. I definately agree with Voltaire when saying this because history is based on each persons opinion, each persons knowledge and perspective of something. History may be interpreted in a way that differs completely from its truth. Some people believe that just because things and events are written in history books, they are 100% true. when really, they arent. History books are written from the perspective of some people and word it their way or to sometimes, their advantage. Ofcourse no country will publish a book about a tragic war that happened in it and its loss. Whether by not explaining the event well, or just not mentioning it, writers can change the way an event seems and may convince us that that is true, when sometimes, its a lie.
So yes, history is a lie and we might never know the real story behind events that occured in the past and are still happening.

Hmmm.. favorite blog topic?

Well, this is a hard question for sure cause you know, I loved every single one of them... ha.
BUT, when choosing one, I would choose the "Six Word Story" one because despite it being the shortest blog we had to do, just kidding, it still had a big story behind it. Though it was only six words, it pretty much summarized the life of family moving toward the west and summoned up the event. Six words can have a big meaning.
So, I would def. pick that one, though I enjoyed every single one of the others. :)

Agree with disagree with the blogging assestment system? hmm..

WELL, first of alll, I definately love doing the blog posts for this class, just saying :)
I love how its ONLINE, and there isnt really a due date yet at the same time there is? hah. But the topics are fun, and not too hard and interesting and I love how we have selections instead of doing 2 or 3 blog posts you assign, so we can do which ever we like to do.
I dislike though how we kind of have to do them EVERY week, but it actually helped me understand so much while doing them and researching them and made every subject easy to understand. Oh and I also hate how its kind of easy to get off task and get on facebook or something but thats just me, cause I dont concentrate hah.
But other than that,  I definately agree with system and encourage all my other teachers to do it because if they do, then i'd be doing all my assignment and never missing one. But, THEY SHOULDNT. because its only a Meechin thing, and they cant copy you :)

Online > paper and pen!

I have to admit, doing my blog posts online made it SO much easier and less boring, not that it is boring in the first place. But typing it online is just faster and more enjoyable than just to write it down on a piece of paper like we do for every single other class! It also somehow encouraged me to actually do the posts instead of just procrastinating or not doing it. It motivated me to do my work.
WHICH IS WHY I LOVE THIS CLASS, ITS FREAKING AWESOME :)

Yay, we're finally here!

"We're here, we're here!", that was the first thing to be said by the arriving people at Ellis Island. Feeling all anxious and happy and excited to be there, the immigrants couldnt believe it. Though having to be given mental tests and be tested for diseases to be approved for entry, the immigrants were just happy to be there and didnt care. All dressed up and ready to arrive at Ellis Island, the immigrants cannot wait to live a new life different than their ones before. Luxurious ballrooms and dining rooms, oh how can you not be excited about that? So going to Ellis Island is something immigrants were looking for, and was their way of starting a new and better life.

The harsh working of women

The lyrics from "Song of the Shirt" illustrate how hard and rough women's life were back in the days. Their work seemed endless, working from day to night, every single day of the week. They were worn out and exhausted and didnt even get any breaks, and what's even worse, is how little they were paid. The three main ideas of this song were women, religion, rich and poor. Poor, hungry, and dirty, women just stitched, stitched, and stitched all day. This shows how cruel and bad women were treated in the past, and how their lives basically was made up of work everyday and nothing else. After reading the lyrics of this song, I sympathize women for how they were treated at that time yet very proud of their perseverance.

Ohh Hollywooood..

What’s the first that comes to mind when you hear the word cowboy? I’m guessing you think of a muscular, handsome guy neatly dressed in a long sleeve shirt and dressy pants and boots with spurs, holding a gun. If so, you’re incorrect because THAT is how Hollywood created the image of cowboys. THAT is what they want you to believe. Cowboys may seem like that, but they are definitely not similar to the way Hollywood made them appear.
You might think being a cowboy is easy; all you have to do is act tough and ride around on your horse, and shooting a person then putting your gun back in that gun holder all in a dramatic way. I hate to burst your bubble, but that is not all what cowboys do. In the 1800s, cowboys were responsible hard workers. They performed their jobs efficiently. They had to make money for their families and in order to live. Life wasn’t as easy then as it is today. Whether it was managing cattle’s or roping or even busting broncs, cowboys worked durably. On top of their ranch-related tasks, cowboys also engaged in agricultural work.  Never would have guessed that, huh?
Also, one of the cowboys’ hard tasks was cow handing; which is to prod cattles using long poles in order to load them on railroad cars for shipping. It was a very hard and tiring job.  But of course, in order to be able to perform all those jobs, a cowboy needed the most important thing; a horse. Without horses, he would not be able to cross long distances and herd the cattles and easily perform his ranch tasks.
Hollywood did set our minds off of the REAL image of cowboys. They made you think they are perfectly strong and healthy and live it easy, but in reality, they aren’t. Behind that fake act, cowboys actually lived a hard life. There wasn’t instant medical help when they needed them like nowadays, when they got hurt, they had to suffer and hopelessly wait till it heal or just die. Although cowboys seem to appear all strong, the shorting of food did cause weakness and malnutrition.  So, as you see, their lives weren’t as perfect as they seemed to be. Cowboys worked hard and efficiently and earned their names.
And now, moving on to their wardrobe; at least there’s one thing Hollywood depicted right! Of course, you know, cowboys wore long-sleeved shirt and work pants, with those awesome spur-full boots and cowboy hats and kerchiefs. Now that, is a pretty awesome outfit right there.
And for fun, which still happens in our present, Rodeos were held! Rodeos is an event where people come together and enjoy their time and compete at bull riding, indoor roping and horse riding. Bull riding was the most popular competition as people were excited to compete in or watch. They did deserve a little fun after their hardworking days.
So, by that, I hope I cleared up the wrong image Hollywood has depicted of cowboys! Cowboys weren’t as “cool” looking as they were, they were hard workers and worked efficiently and did their best to survive. So, I hope you learned your lesson of never trusting Hollywood movies because, THEYRE NOT ALWAYS TRUE!

So now you learn from... gaming?

Games are known to be a way for enjoyment or just to waste time, but can you actually LEARN from gaming?
Oregon trail is a way to show the gamers how life was a long time ago. The player feels as if they actually are going through it and learns the rules of the games which were the way of living at that time. The player must  play it smartly or else he wont make it till the end. The game shows many options and advices to help the player play more smartly. So, by playing this game, a person would be able to understand the life of the past and know how and what to do in order to survive and be acknowledged with the situations at that time.
So, can gaming help a person learn? ... Nowadays, it is possible.

The treatment of African Americans during Reconstruction vs. the treatment of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement

When it comes to the treatment of African Americans, it completely differed during the Reconstruction and the United States Civil Rights Movement. African Americans were not treated fairly like whites, and they went through many obstacles and struggles because of racism.
Let’s start off with the treatment of African Americans during the Reconstruction. Even though the 13th Amendment ended slavery, blacks were still treated with lack of respect. Many people still viewed them as an inferior class and did not treat them fairly. There was definitely a continuation of racial segregation; for example, education for the white and black were divided. Blacks were considered unimportant and were underfunded. Blacks were also under the violence of racial masses of people. They were treated with disrespect in the society and were discriminated against. They also had to go through widespread employment discrimination. As you can see, blacks were still treated badly and much differently than whites during that time period. However, over time, there was a positive outcome for the African Americans; they were registered to vote. And the problem? They outnumbered the white voters which once again caused problems. Whites ended up manipulating the voting results and therefore they controlled the outcomes of the election.
The lives of African Americans during Reconstruction, honestly, did not differ much than their lives during slavery. They were still under the control of a white landowner. A new system called the sharecropping system made blacks work on their owners land in return for a share or half the harvest. The landowners provided land, a house, supplies and work animals for those former slaves. And normally, at the end of the season, the former slaves would be in debt for those landowners and would have to remain working in order to pay off the debt. Thus, the end of the Civil War did not really improve the conditions of the former slaves because slavery was just replaced with the sharecropping system, education was still not completely available for them, and their voting was simply manipulated.
Now, off to the next point; how were African Americans treated during the Civil Rights Movement? Well, the Civil Rights Movement is when the United States intended at stopping the discrimination against African Americans and the ability of them voting in the Southern States. The purpose of that movement was for freedom, dignity, respect, and social and economic equality. The good thing is, discrimination and segregation did end, unfortunately, not completely though.
The movement ended the discrimination against black men and women all over the United States. It ended discrimination in public places; schools, workplace, government, and employment. It was then illegal to discriminate against color and race. All people were equally treated and had equal rights as citizens. And when it came to voting, the Voting Rights Act was passed and federal observers were positioned in polls to make sure there are equal voting rights.
The Civil Rights Movement included the 13th and 14th Amendments. The Thirteenth Amendment eliminates slavery throughout the U.S. The Fourteenth Amendment, on the other hand, protects a person’s civil and political rights from being deprived by any state, ended slavery in the US, and finally, it was in opposition to the violence against black people.
So therefore, when comparing the treatment of former black slaves during the Reconstruction and the Civil Rights movement, there is evidently a big difference. The degrading mistreatment of African Americans after the Civil War did drastically change for the better and resulted in the freedom and respect of all kinds of people no matter what color or race or ethnicity or even sex, and gave all citizens equal rights in the US and ended discrimination and segregation all over the United States.

Does history REALLY matter?

Well heck yeah it does! History is everything. History is what made today! History is what made US. It is also what we make. We shape our history, we are linked to our history, WE ARE a part of history! History is tomorrows yesterday, it is everything that has been done and said. Without history, we’d be nowhere. History is what improves us, what makes us better, what makes us realize our mistakes and can try again.  We cannot repeat history, but we can learn from it. History is a story of past events, but a story that has many versions. To each person, history differs; their facts differ, their opinions differ, their description differ.
And finally, history ... is the lie commonly agreed upon.

Did Reconstruction affect former slaves?

Former slaves were not happy with their situation; not being able to vote and treated poorly. Unfortunately, Reconstruction did not do much to help that change. African Americans who were freed, were employed by landowners to work on their plots of lands due to the new sharecropping system. The landowner did though provide them with land, a house, tools and seeds and work animals. But basically, there was no difference in the treatment of the African Americans due to the replacement of slavery with the sharecropping system. The only difference was that instead of being connected to an owner, they were connected to landowners. But, the reconstruction did permit  blacks to vote, but after their votes adding up to be higher than the white people votes, white people where not happy and therefore resulted in manipulating the voting system.
So basically, Reconstruction did have its outcomes when it came to former slaves but not dramatically. The former slaves’ lives were very similar and did not change much after Reconstruction.

Stereotypes.. stereotypes.. oh, and more stereotypes.

There are so many stereotypes nowadays, I lost track. All Indians are cheap, all muslims are terrorists, all black people are lazy, all asians are good at math, all italians are in the mob, and the list goes on and on and on...
Stereotypes increase daily in our present lives. What are stereotypes? Stereotypes are conceptions based on assumptions. Just because some asians are known to be good at math, all asians have suddenly become good in math. Stereotypes are peoples beliefs; their point of view of something or someone. The more events that occur in the world, the more popular the stereotypes will become and the greater the list. People believe what they hear on the news, or what they hear from other people, and without doubt, believe it. Not knowing if its actually true or not, people just believe it and become stereotypical and judge other people.
Some people should know that every human being is the same, and no matter what religion, nationality, or race he is, we all come together and are the same in every single way and I am pretty positive a person does not like to be judged by other people, especially if theyre being judged without actually knowing them...

"that government is best which governs least" ... hmm.

What first of all, what does this quote really mean? Well, we can definately tell that the Thoreau meant that a governments are best when they either govern smaller lands or get less involved. I agree with Thoreau because smaller land and smaller governing means less problems and a better society and governing. It is better than having a government governing big land and not being able to carry the responsibility and take care of it. So by that, the smaller the land and the less involved a government gets, the better the government and the better the society.

Children and their history

Young children in schools are taught history in a kind of different way. They do not really go into details or learn about the specific results or actions of events. They try to keep it as simple and age appropriate. Even though what theyre taught might be slightly incorrect or innaccurate, I think that curriculum should not be changed because as the students get older, they will be wiser and more able to understand the specific and accurate details of those events and will be easier to study and comprehend.

What history books lack

History books differ from one country to another; not just by the language its written in, but by the content. A person would thinks a history book has every single historical event that occured in the past, they are mistaken. Some countries tend to leave out some negative events or information due to their dislike or ashame because it does not really reflect a good image on them. By not mentioning their loses or defeats, they either do not get into detail or just fail to mention it. That ofcourse has its disadvantages because students will be unaware of some important historical events and details and they will have wrong ideas about them and not know the truth behind every thing that had happened in the past.
